Half Ticket: A True Braindead Comedy

The movie Half-Ticket reminds us of those days when walking over the childhood lanes were a matter of grace and the songs and acting of legendary Kishore Kumar has always brought joy to our heart over time.

Even after 59 years of the movie Half-Ticket it never fails to fill our hearts with the joy of reliving the days of a braindead comedy again where the limitless zany energy of Kishore Kumar and irresistibly charming Madhubala and several brilliant songs composed by Salil Choudhury, written by Shailendra makes it a delight to the eyes and soul.

Lesser had it has been known to the world the making of the movie Half-Ticket and how Kishore Kumar finally accepted to play the role in the movie. We all have heard the rumours that Kishore Kumar had accepted to play the role in the movie so as it uprises as a huge flop and he gets saved from not paying taxes, but in reality, it wasn't the same. Kishore Kumar was so busy with the schedule that he can't give any dates for the film Half-Ticket, so the director Kalidas took the opportunity of throwing a tantrum over him to get his schedules for the movie Half-Ticket and complained to the income tax department as Kishore Kumar isn't paying full of his taxes. This resulted from a raid in the house of Kishore Kumar following a case against him as well. A few days later the director visited Kishore Kumar's house where got locked up in the room after having a chat over a cup of tea. The director Kalidas started pleading with him to open the door as he was scared of revenge. An hour later Kumar opened the door and told him to never come again to his house.

He then completed the film shoot for Half-Ticket and also the beautiful melodies. Half-Ticket proved to be an eternal classic of its time with the acting of Kishore Kumar and all its songs like, "Chand Raat Tum Ho" and "Woh Ek Nigah Kya Mili" were sung by the legend Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar

There was also one more song that was scheduled for the duet, "Aake Seedhi Lagi Dil Pe" but on the day of recording Lata Mangeshkar couldn't report to the studio for recording, and the legend got the idea, saying Why not sing both the male and female part of the song for which he went on to convince the music director Salil Choudhury and did the final recording. And yes, the female voice was picturized on the legend himself and the male voice on Pran, and it proved to be one of the most iconic scenes in the movie.

Out of all the best parts of the movie Half-Ticket is when Vijay bids adieu to his irascible father (Moni Chatterjee) and photo-framed mother (Kishore Kumar himself again). The innocence of the face and character portrays it all how the legend made the movie more absorbing into our hearts and mind with his ceaseless glamour even after stepping into a female character (Vijay's mother) or for the female voice of the song "Aake Seedhi Lage Dil Pe".

The film Half-Ticket was released on October 19th of 1962 and from a brainless or braindead comedy it turned out to be one of the most important comedy films made in Bollywood of the 1960s. The film grossed ₹1cr (net of ₹0.5cr) and turned to the twelfth highest grosser of 1962.

One can find the references and echoes of Half Ticket in so many movies till now in Bollywood and more to count upon. Whether it may be the iconic scene of Mausi from Sholay or Amitabh in Namak Halal, Sunder by Govinda in Jaan Se Pyaara, or the dance of Govinda in Partner inspired from "Chil Chil Chilla Ke" dance all carry the essence of Kishore Kumar's antics comedy from 1962. In 2014, director Sajid Khan and his film Humshakal's dug into the scenes of Half–Ticket to give tribute to such a slapstick comedy, but it's known how it rolled out as a disaster.
